September 18th honors Chilean Independence Day, and Chilean empanadas (essentially folded meat pies) are indispensable. The Chilean empanada habit came from Galician Spain, where empanadas have been documented as early as the 13th century. However, France has had an enormous impact in the development and culture of Chile – more noticeably in their wine. To celebrate this Chilean holiday, 39 Rue de Jean will be offering an empanada special, served with the traditional side of “ensalada Chilena,” on Monday, September 18th for dinner service, along with some Chilean wine specials by the glass and by the bottle. The empanadas themselves are made with an authentic Chilean recipe, with a slight French twist. Reservations are recommended, but not required.
