Local shrimp will be featured at the first-ever “Shrimp and Grits Charleston” cook-off, scheduled for Aug. 30.

According to organizer Georgia Schrubbe, the South Carolina Seafood Alliance is donating the shrimp for the 15-restaurant showdown. Competitors include Stars Restaurant, Vincent Chicco’s, Hall’s Chophouse and Leaf.

“The chefs have been given loose guidelines,” Schrubbe says. “Essentially, create (your) own version of shrimp and grits.”

The grits are coming from Adluh Flour. Participants have their pick of yellow or white.

In addition to the shrimp-and-grits tasting, the 7 p.m.-10 p.m. event will include live music and a cookbook signing. Striped Pig Distillery and Charleston Distilling Co. are among the party’s beverage providers.

Event passes are priced at $35. Each pass includes 16 tickets, which can be used for liquor, beer, wine, water or shrimp and grits. The food samples cost one ticket apiece. To purchase, visit shrimpandgritscharleston.com.
